Context

Artists in the City in partnership with Oxford Road Community School invited artist Katherine Belcher to work with Year 5 and 6 pupils exploring the theme of “The Family” in the local area.  The project was developed in response to a major new film commission with Turner Prize winning artist Gillian Wearing entitled ‘Family History’ which was premiered in Reading in July 2006.

Project

The project draws upon the history of the local area.  William Henry Fox Talbot (1800-1877) is recognised as a pioneer of early photography.  In 1843, with Nicolaas Henneman, he set up the first commercial photographic printing studio in Baker Street Reading.  Here he developed techniques of photographic developing, fixing and printing, enabling photographic printing and distribution on a large scale.

Artist

Katherine Belcher is an artist based in Berkshire who has much experience of working in schools and on participatory and community projects.
