PARALLEL TEXTURES

a sound installation by

Iris Garrelfs

Saturday 14 September 2002

Berkshire Record Office, Reading

Context

In association with Heritage Open Weekend, Artists in the City invited Iris Garrelfs to create a sonic response to the Berkshire Record Office collections that are housed in one of Reading's recently commissioned buildings of architectural interest. The Berkshire Record Office holds a wealth of material on all aspects of local history including maps, plans and documents dating from the earliest moments of record keeping.

Project

Garrelfs constructed an audio composition inspired by the archival material held at Berkshire Record Office. This included a microfilm of a 18th century parish register, an etching of Jane Austen who was at school in Reading, a photograph of the oldest map of Reading, as well as letters written in the 18th century by Reading citizens who emigrated to America and Australia. The artist has also incorporated recordings discovered in the sound archives at The Museum of Reading - a song recorded for Huntley and Palmers biscuit factory and the sound of steam engines - both reflecting key aspects of Reading's historic industries.

Several different types of computer software were used to shape the work, for example Metasyth software transposed visual material into sound. The work is made in 4 parts and is played across pairs of speakers. Each strand or "thread" of the composition wanders from one speaker to another. Visitors were invited to wander through the space and interact with the work, absorbing the sounds as they passed through, and viewing some of the documents that inspired the piece.

Artist

Iris Garrelfs is known for her emotive glitch-tech soundworks described by UK magazine Magic as "... a chaotic Tom Waits-style junkyard orchestra gridlocked into a rigid techno matrix." The computer as an instrument is one of her main interests, following her through her musical life, from early beginnings in Berlin where she composed music for experimental videos on a cherished Atari whilst studying ethnomusicology and vocals. Garrelfs' past releases include compositions for the Broken Voice and Hmm. She has performed regularly in London and around the UK. Commissions for sound installations include CCA Glasgow and Watermans Art Centre, Brentford. As a director of Sprawl since 1997 Garrelfs has been instrumental in developing programmes of new music for venues that range from Tate Modern to the Spitz and from Manchester to Los Angeles.
